I am campaigning for museums to engage with mental health having been a mental health user in the past in the NHS. I my Depression as part of me but does not define who I am. I now understand how to manage it by a holistic approach of the mental, spiritual and physical.
However, I have been a NHS service user when I was in serious crisis. It was necessary just to contain me but medication and hospitalisation is not the long-term answer.

Nice article Joe!
I am also happy to consider myself a Survivor, since I have dropped the coat of the user, that somehow I ended up wearing.
The main thing that "users" have to understand is that they are the ones being used: the system is using them, but apparently there is no proof that anyone is being "cured", no matter what the effort of Psychiatry is.
Shame that most of this effort is concentrated on producing money-making drugs in which little- if any - consideration is taken to what a human being really need to be fully functional .
The only aim seems to be the one of obtaining a zombie-like army that refrain to live their amazing lives for the sake of some "professionals" that have the authority to say that your individuality is a symptom of an illness.
Most of the Survivors are the ones that have opted for a saner route, I believe
"Recovery begins with NON-Compliance!" are the wise words of the Mad Hatters Of Bath.
Thank you for mentioning Friday's event btw, I hope to meet you there.
